Sen. Bill Nelson says he has prostate cancer, having surgery

Nelson’s spokesman said the Senator’s doctors found the cancer early during a routine exam. He said the cancer doesn’t appear to have spread.

Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, for which he will undergo surgery on Monday at a hospital in Washington.

The Democrat from Florida now has no symptoms, according to Nelson’s press secretary.

He has become popular for clearing obstacles for highway funding, the environment the space program and other important matters related to the state.

Nelson, a lawyer with a low-key demeanor, was elected to the Senate in 2000 and is serving his third six-year term. “Extensive scans showed no signs of the cancer spreading outside the prostate”. Of them, 27,540 will succumb to the disease, says the organization.
