Sen. Chuck Schumer wants Halloween face paint tested for toxins

Senator Charles Schumer is warning parents that a few of that makeup may contain harmful metals such as lead. “If they see it on the shelf they think it’s safe, but it’s not”, he said.

As Halloween approaches, children and adults have plans for their costume party and majority go in for face painting for that added touch. Chinese paints and other products tested in the past were high in lead content and other banned chemicals.

Schumer already wrote a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), urging officials to strictly regulate these unsafe products and pushing the agency to come up with rigid guidelines when it comes to revealing the harmful components of the products, which are not adequately presented on labels.

Currently, the FDA does not conduct routine testing on these products. He notices that many parents believe that face paints sold are safe, and they are clueless on what is painted on their children’s faces for this end-of-October holiday.

Schumer said parents should beware of any Halloween product that is made in China, as all of the makeups tested had at least one risky chemical in them, like lead or nickel.

The toxic chemicals can build up in the body over time and may cause individuals to experience abdominal pain and vomiting.

“Make sure it doesn’t say ‘made in China, ‘” Schumer said. The New York Daily news reports that a report from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, based on tests made by the group, found that 10 face paints have heavy metals, while six contain unsafe chemicals.
