Senate deal to halt U.S. govt shutdown

The Senate then voted overwhelmingly to approve the CR, with the House expected to follow suit. The action set up further votes on the funding bill in the Senate and House before sending it to President Donald Trump for his signature.

After special weekend sessions of Congress which had seen bitter recriminations traded by both parties, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pledged to address Democrat concerns over key issues such as immigration reform in a speech to the chamber late on Sunday. House Republican leaders are confident that they can quickly pass the bill, Politico reports.

But Schumer said on the Senate floor it was time to get back to work, and lashed out at Trump.

Democrats held a 90-minute meeting before the vote on whether to accept McConnell’s offer. “They blinked”, principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah told CNN.

While public reaction to the shutdown may have been muted at the weekend, Mr Flake said Republicans would suffer politically in the long run.

“Last week, I was moved to tears of joy when Democrats stood up and fought for progressive values and for Dreamers”.

Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) speaks to reporters after the Senate reached an agreement.

Asked if the White House and the six senators planned to roll out DACA legislation in the next few days, the senior official declined to comment, adding the administration has been “pretty clear” about what it wants on that issue and other immigration matters.

Enactment by Trump of the bill will allow the government to reopen fully on Tuesday and keep the lights on through February 8, when Congress will have to revisit the budget and immigration policy, two disparate issues that have become closely linked. In an immigration bill, Republicans want increased border security funding and changes to extended family migration and the visa “lottery” system. If not, he said “it would be my intention to take up legislation” addressing those issues.

“We’re going to vote to reopen the government”, Sen.

A binding commitment that the House will take up whatever the Senate passes on DACA.

“We will vote today to re-open the government to continue negotiating a global agreement”, Mr Schumer said.

Up until Monday, most federal workers were not directly affected by the shutdown that began at midnight on Friday.Federal government operations varied from agency to agency, with a number of critical functions continuing.

Trump decided in September to end an Obama-era initiative that shielded them from deportation, effective in March, although he said Congress should act to protect them.

However on Monday, the Democratic leadership chose to support a similar measure. “Not good”, his first tweet said.

Democrats did not receive any immigration concessions in the legislation.

Democratic aides say the votes still aren’t there to re-open the government. That is when President Trump has ordered the DACA program to come to an end.

Essential federal services and military activity are continuing, but even active-duty troops will not be paid until a deal is reached to reopen the United States government.
