The declarations – from Ford’s husband and three friends – do not provide direct corroboration of the alleged attack but suggest Ford shared details about her recollection in the years prior to Kavanaugh’s nomination by President Trump on July 9.
Republicans narrowly control the Senate, 51-49, and McConnell expressed confidence he can get at least 50 votes in favor of Kavanaugh, which could allow him to be confirmed with Vice President Mike Pence casting the tie-breaking vote.
After a dramatic week long standoff, Kavanaugh’s accuser Ford finally committed Sunday to be questioned in a public hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is weighing Kavanaugh’s nomination. Senior Senate Republicans said a vote in the full Senate could happen as early as next Tuesday.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said it’s “not uncommon” for senators to rely on professional staffers to lead questioning at hearings, and pointed to the Watergate investigation as precedent.
“It’s very important to take allegations of those who come forward seriously, and I think we need to go into this hearing with the view that we will listen”, she said. “I’m confident we’re going to win”, said McConnell.
“I’m not going to comment on her motivations”, Wilkinson said on CNN, adding that she felt sorry for Ford for having been identified as Kavanaugh’s accuser against her initial wishes.
Ford and Kavanaugh are set to testify Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Republican President Donald Trump, who has also been accused of sexual misconduct, escalated his rhetoric against both of Kavanaugh’s accusers on Tuesday and called the allegations “a con game being played by the Democrats”.
Kavanaugh has strongly denied the allegations from both Ramirez and Ford. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) sat on the allegations for more than a month, then redacted part of the documentation – in such a way that, Gavin said, seemed created to help her cause politically.
Unlike a previous staff interview, Democratic aides listened in on the Tuesday afternoon call, another person briefed on the conversation said.
One of the biggest points of contention remained the outside counsel.
Earlier, Mr Trump has staunchly defended his embattled Supreme Court nominee against a new allegation of sexual misconduct.
