He also reported that the Carson team would announce a new campaign manager – Bob Dees, a retired US Army major general who has advised Carson on foreign policy and national security – at a Monday press conference.

He had been mentoring Thompson for about a year, when an unwanted sexual encounter occurred at his New York City home, she says. His attorney, Pressley said this morning that his legal team will defend their client until he is completely exonoratioed.

Thursday morning a sleepy Carson received a phone call from campaign manager Barry Bennett telling the retired neurosurgeon he was leaving the campaign after months of turmoil – primarily related to interference from Carson adviser Armstrong Williams.

Williams has very close ties to Carson, but he is independent from Carson’s actual campaign, which has apparently been a source of frustration for now-ex-campaign manager Barry Bennett, who resigned today along with communications manager Doug Watts and deputy campaign manager Lisa Cohen.

In a statement, Watts said: “Barry Bennett and I have resigned from the Carson campaign effective immediately”. The latest Real Clear Politics average of recent polls shows Carson has slipped to fourth place, behind Trump, Cruz and Sen.

For a brief moment in 2015 (RIP), Ben Carson seemed like an actual force within the laughably large field of Republican presidential hopefuls. One notable example was Williams’ comments to the New York Times about Carson’s canceled trip to Africa, Bennett told Politico. “They’re giving me a lot more credit than I deserve”, he told Reuters. Carson, after his surge in the polls, was also the subject of weeks of negative media coverage that suggested that he exaggerated parts of his personal story.

“Whatever the issue was at the national level, it does not affect us at the Iowa level”, said Rob Taylor, a Republican state representative and Carson’s campaign chairman in the state. It helps that Carson’s Iowa campaign director, Ryan Rhodes, will remain in his position and perhaps take on greater responsibilities, Taylor said. “As we enter a new phase of the campaign cycle, it is necessary to invigorate my campaign with a strategy that more aggressively shares my vision and world-view with the American people”, the statement from the GOP candidate read.

“I spent the holidays hearing every day that I had lost my job”, Bennett said in an interview Thursday. “They work very hard for Dr. Carson”. There is nothing we could change structurally at this point to make it better.

“If Dr. Carson said there would be a shake-up, he’d already weighed the consequences for the coming primaries”, Williams said.

The campaign raised an impressive $23 million in the fourth quarter, thanks to its fundraising juggernaut that relies largely on small donors. “I’ve never seen him more relaxed, more authoritarian, and more in control and that is good news as we go into 2016”.
