Sentencing of Colorado woman who cut baby from womb
According to CNN, Lane was found guilty in February for attacking Michelle Wilkins, who was seven-months-pregnant at the time, and cutting her baby from her womb. The judge granted her request but said Wilkins must look at her while making those statements. “It is clear that you need healing and my honest belief that you get it”, she said, according to CBS Denver.

A judge on Friday sentenced the Colorado woman to 100 years in prison for cutting the almost 8-month-old fetus from a stranger’s womb.
Wilkins focused on her unborn daughter Friday. Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garnett has said 36-year-old Dynel Lane could spend the rest of her life in prison after a jury convicted her in February of attempting to kill Michelle Wilkins. She was desperate to have another child, DeHerrera said. “In this case, I believe justice was done and we’re pleased with the sentencing in this case”.
Wilkins, who survived the attack, addressed the court and said Lane lives in a “narcissistic fantasy”.
“This is something she has never gotten over, because she blames herself”, Herold said. Her minimum sentence could be 56 years.
One day after having surgery to treat her wounds, Wilkins learned that the baby did not survive. “That’s because you took that from them”.
Wilkins, 27, testified at trial that she went to Lane’s home after seeing a Craigslist ad for maternity and baby clothes. Lane hit Wilkins over the head with a lava lamp and stabbed Wilkins in the neck with the broken glass. She could not be sentenced for murder because there was no evidence the baby lived outside the womb.
Berkenkotter sentenced Lane to 48 years for attempted murder and 32 years for unlawful termination of a pregnancy.
The victim was able to make an emergency call, but was said to be barely conscious when officers arrived. Lane then cut open Wilkins’ stomach, removed the baby, and carried her from the basement, leaving Wilkins to die.
Lane’s mother and sister also testified and expressed their remorse for her actions. Lane appeared to cry during the sentencing hearing when her family spoke.
Dynel Lane was convicted of attempted murder after the horrific attack on Michelle Watkins in Colorado.
Defense attorneys contended during the trial that Lane had pretended to be pregnant for almost a year, and committed the attack in an unplanned, frenzied manner because she needed a baby to explain her pregnancy to Ridley.

“People are hungry to hear from Ms. Lane”, the judge said. However, she and her mother were assaulted in the worst way and Michelle’s baby was killed. “She certainly understands the gravity of what happened….” But I am angry for all of the pain she has caused. She said after sentencing that she wanted her daughter to be acknowledged. She was given credit for the more than a year she has served since her arrest. “She was one of the victims in this”. She chose not to address the court on her own behalf.
