Serena beats Venus in two sets at Wimbledon

If Serena wins Wimbledon, it’ll be her first since 2012. It doesn’t matter. At the end of the day you need to get through these matches now, sooner or later.

That makes the bottom half of the draw appetising for Agnieszka Radwanska, the Polish 13th seed, who takes on United States number 21 seed Madison Keys. And there was an enormous cheer when she won her opening point of the match after losing the first eight. It was simply a bittersweet moment when both sisters hugged each other at the net and walked off the court together.

Djokovic and Kevin Anderson soon grabbed their bags and walked back off court.

“It’s never easy, but you just play for the competition and enjoy the moment”, she continued.

The only years that a Williams sister hasn’t won a Grand Slam title since 1999 are 2004, 2006 and 2011.

The younger sister has already won the Australian and French Open and with the 6-4 and 6-3 win against her sister, she is now only three matches shy from her third Major title this season.

“Playing before the later rounds is definitely not ideal, in particular because I’m her sister”, she said.

Serena, bidding for her sixth Wimbledon title, took just 67 minutes to see off Venus on Centre Court and will play Victoria Azarenka or Belinda Bencic for a place in the semi-finals.

This was the 26th meeting between the sisters, the 12th at a Grand Slam and the sixth at Wimbledon. She secured a break at 2-2 in the first set, allowing her to serve out the remainder of that set. But an unforced error on Venus’ serve immediately put Serena up 3-2.

Wozniacki has now reached the fourth round at the All England Club five times without ever progressing. She said she would be cheering for Venus after everything she has been through and since she is a huge inspiration on other players.

Sharapova endured her toughest test so far but still made it through to the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kazakhstan’s unseeded Zarina Diyas.

But, Venus said: “Serena is looking in good shape to win Wimbledon“. “It’s different. Especially when she’s going for something this historic, which is achievable for her”. Get past ex- No. 1 Victoria Azarenka on Tuesday, then win twice more, and she would complete a self-styled “Serena Slam” of four consecutive major championships, something she also did in 2002-03.

“This is where I feel really comfortable in a grand slam”.

Elsewhere, Britain’s Jamie ensured at least one Murray will be in the Wimbledon last four, as Andy’s brother and his Australian doubles partner John Peers beat Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 in their quarter-final tie.

The world number 47 has dumped out seeds Karolina Pliskova, Samantha Stosur and last month s beaten French Open finalist Lucie Safarova.

Vandeweghe had never been beyond the third round of a grand slam before this year’s tournament at Wimbledon.

But Djokovic used every ounce of his champion qualities to battle back, levelling against the big serving South African at two sets all before the match was halted due to bad light.

“It’s been a while since there has been that many Americans in the second week, and it’s just really exciting”, said Keys, who beat Olga Govortsova 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
