Serena crashes out of US Open, loses No. 1 ranking

With Williams out of the picture, Kerber and Pliskova will meet with a title on the line for the second time in a month.

The No. 1 ranking, which she has held for 186 consecutive weeks, will now go to Angelique Kerber when the new rankings are released Monday.

“Serena, she’s a champion so it’s never easy to play her”.

For Wozniacki, this was a disappointing end to a superb fortnight, in which the world number 74 showed glimpses of the form that once saw her placed at the top of the rankings in 2010 and 2011.

Venus Williams’ fourth-round exit came at the hands, or racket, of Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, falling 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, dropping the deciding set in a tie-breaker.

“She’s a big hitter and she can have 50 winners and you cannot do much about it”, Pliskova said.

“Definitely, they did a lot for tennis”, Pliskova said.

Serena Williams reign has ended. “Final or first round, it’s the same”, Mouratoglou said. Serena then handed her the next break with a flurry of unforced errors.

Williams knows she can be better, though.

“So many simple, simple shots that I easily could have made”, she said. It simply means that our appreciation for Williams in no way needs to hinge on her opponents.

“For me it’s awesome to be after Steffi, the number one player from Germany”, Kerber said. “But since the start it was bad”.

Afterward, her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, said Williams injured her left knee in the quarterfinals.

Pliskova, the No. 10 seed, had seven aces and won 84 percent of her first-serve points.

Kerber, meanwhile hs been on the fast track in 2016 and her newfound poise was on display in her quarter-final win over Vinci.

Pliskova, meanwhile, is now one victory from her first, and on Thursday night, she certainly looked the part of an up-and-comer with the strokes and demeanor to go far.

Williams had also hoped to win an Open-era record 23rd major singles title.

Germany’s new World No.1 Kerber will be waiting for the Czech in the final. Not too long ago, this matchup would have seen Wozniacki as the higher ranked player, but come semifinal day, it will be Kerber who starts as the clear favourite. Pliskova is on a roll, and has finally been able to show how risky she can be in a major.

Karolina Pliskova dominated the first set against Serena Williams to take a surprising lead in their U.S. Open semifinal.

The 28-year-old left-hander, who won the Australian Open in January and was Wimbledon runner-up in July, is the first German woman to reach the final in NY since Steffi Graf in 1996.

They had played for 46 minutes, and it was clear who was better.

Touted by the U.S. Tennis Association as the “future home of American tennis”, the USTA National Campus will open in Florida in January.

“To lose number one is not a big deal”, he said. Mattek-Sands and Safarova downed the fifth-seeded team of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the other.

Garcia and Mladenovic and Mattek-Sands and Safarova met in one other tour final this year, at Charleston, with the French team winning in straight sets.
