Another win, another milestone for Serena Williams who rolled into the US Open last 16 on Sunday morning (NZ time) by crushing Sweden’s Johanna Larsson 6-2 6-1.
After that match, an exhausted Williams sighed, “A win’s a win”, revealing more and more what an emotionally debilitating pursuit the chase for the Grand Slam was becoming.
It was the 307th major win for Williams, breaking the women’s Open era record held by Martina Navratilova and pulling her into a tie with Roger Federer.
Many of Murrays troubles against Paolo Lorenzi were of his own making as he allowed the energetic Italian journeyman to make him look ordinary through two sets before pulling himself together to win 7-6 (7/4), 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
“I don’t know how I came back”, said Halep, whose unforced errors skyrocketed in the second set. “But even if I’m not feeling great, I still manage to get a good fight in out there”. The enduring symbols of American women’s tennis could potentially face off in the semi-final if they both earn wins in their fourth-round and quarter-final round matches.
Murray advances to play 22nd-seeded Grigor Dimitrov, who put away Joao Sousa for a 6-4, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win.
Serena Williams came to NY with concerns about her sore right shoulder and has answered those questions, emphatically. He meets sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori.
Shvedova is best known for the first “golden set” in the Open era, which began in 1968: She won all 24 points of the first set of a victory over Sara Errani at Wimbledon in 2012, one match before a three-set loss to Williams there. Williams argued that disparities persisted between the way male and female athletes were perceived and paid. “I started to feel better more consistently this year, so I’m always trying to find things to help me feel my best”. “I also believe that, as a woman, we have still a lot to do and a lot to be going forward”.
Williams has yielded no more than three games in any of the six sets she played in her first three matches, and she has shown no signs of problems from a shoulder injury that plagued her in recent weeks.
“Tennis players were really fortunate to have pioneers like Billie Jean King and really take a stance for women in tennis”, Williams said.
“I was really excited to reach 307”, Williams said. So now we’re able to benefit and still preach the message and have an easier time. This includes the preparation of derivative works of, or the incorporation of such content into other works.
The six-time US Open champion, whose number one ranking is under threat, next faces Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova, a 6-2 7-5 victor over China’s Zhang Shuai.
Fifth-seeded Simona Halep smashed her racket in frustration en route to a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, third-round victory over 34th-ranked Timea Babos at the U.S. Open.
Halep, who fell in the semi-finals to eventual champion Flavia Pennetta previous year, will play Spain s Carla Suarez Navarro for place in the quarter-finals.
Polish fourth seed Radwanska accounted for Caroline Garcia in straight sets, while fifth-seeded Romanian Halep survived to beat Timea Babos in NY.
Murray joined countryman Kyle Edmund in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows, and a third could join them if Daniel Evans can win his match now underway against third-seeded Stan Wawrinka.
There were some concerns about Serena’s sore right shoulder. Her fastest serve Saturday was 121 miles per hour, and she saved the only break point she faced against Larsson.

It definitely feels solid, she said.
