The wins and ranking triggered lucrative bonuses for the Polish star, enabling her to earn £7 million in the past year.

Serena Williams has replaced Maria Sharapova in Forbes’ list of The World’s Highest-Paid Female Athletes.

Sharapova held the title of No 1 earner for 11 years in a row. Sharapova, who earned $21.9 million over the past 12 months, is now suspended for ingesting a banned substance.

American race driver Danica Patrick is fourth, having earned £13.9m, while the remainder of the top 10 are all tennis players, including Muguruza – seventh with $7.6m – although those earnings will not include prize money garnered from her French Open win.

In second place, Sharapova’s earnings amount to $21,9 million (R326,7 million) over the same period.
