“It’s a huge number”, Williams said of her record 308th win.

NEW YORK (AP) – After Serena Williams won her third-round match at the U.S. Open, she was asked how happy she was with her performance to that stage.
Vinci, bothered by a foot injury this tournament and playing with her left calf strapped yesterday, was ahead with a break on three occasions in the opening set for leads of 1-0, 3-2 and 5-4.
“I couldn’t be just mad that I didn’t make it because I still had a chance to win the tie-break”, Pliskova said.
She has played her way into a quarter-final against fifth-seeded Romanian Simona Halep, who has won just one of their eight career matches. “I’m not overplaying, I’m not underplaying”. I think it’s something that, you know, just really talks about the length of my career, in particular.
Serena Williams returns a shot to Yaroslava Shvedova, of Kazakhstan, during the fourth round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Monday, Sept. 5, 2016, in NY.
Konjuh will now face Czech 10th seed Karolina Pliskova, who saved a match point as she beat Venus Williams 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7-3).
Williams hit an astounding 28 winners in Monday’s 68-minute match.
They met on two occasions in 2015 and they were due to meet in the semifinals in Indian Wells but the American was injured and withdrew, however, they met in the semifinals in Miami a few weeks later and it was one of the matches of the year with Williams taking it in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
This quarterfinal match will be the first match of the night session in the Arthur Ashe Stadium, and the victor of this match will face a first-time Grand Slam semifinalist in the semifinals, either 10th seed Karolina Pliskova who won in Cincinnati this year and is riding a nine-match winning streak including a fourth round victory over Williams’ sister Venus or 18-year-old Ana Konjuh who ousted fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the previous round.
“When I serve well I feel like it definitely helps me to be able to know that I can hold. Everyone I’m playing is playing like they’re No. 1”, Williams said. To me it doesn’t really matter who I play because I have to expect they’re going to play the match of their life. “That’s how I go into these matches now”.
For that to be in a Grand Slam is pretty cool.
When she’s not dominating on the court, Williams has also been busting a move for Delta. Until this tournament, she never had been past the third round in 17 appearances at majors.
Watt returned to practice Monday for the first time since back surgery in July and coach Bill O’Brien said after practice that he would play. After losses in the Australian and French Open finals this year, Williams won her long-awaited 22nd Grand Slam trophy in Wimbledon before losing in the third round of the Olympics last month.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion has been serving well throughout the tournament, and it appears that her shoulder problems have gone away, however, Williams has a bigger problem to deal with and that is to retain the world number one ranking.
