Serena Williams loses in US Open semis for 2nd year in row
When Serena won her first US Open title in 1999, Pliskova was just seven-years-old, and it was her younger opponent who was staying calm under the lights to maintain her focus against a more aggressive Williams at the start of the second set.

The only other German woman to reach the No. 1 ranking was the legendary Steffi Graf, who, like Williams, won 22 Grand Slam singles titles.
Lucie Safarova, of the Czech Republic, left, celebrates with Bethanie Mattek-Sands after winning their women’s doubles semifinal match against Ekaterina Makarova, of Russian Federation, and Elena Vesnina, of Russian Federation, at the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016, in NY.
“I have been having some serious left knee problems. So many simple, simple shots that I easily could have made”, Williams said.
“When you’re hampered, you’re thinking of other things. I fought all I could, and just came up a bit short”. “But it was what it was”.
When she secured a further break for 3-2 in the second, Williams was in trouble.
But she believes she laid the foundations for her shock semi-final victory by saving a match point in her gruelling three-set win over Venus in the fourth round. “I wasn’t exhausted from yesterday’s match”, said Williams.
“I was making errors that I never make, and definitely I didn’t make in this tournament in particular”, said Williams. “If I can’t turn around after 24 hours and play again, then I shouldn’t be on the tour”.
“I will try to take the revenge against her”, said Kerber, who holds a 4-3 career edge over the big-serving Pliskova. It was a mismatch of sorts, as Serena Williams would battle Koralina Pliskova.
“One more step to go”, she said.
“OK, I’m not going to repeat myself”.
Kerber became the first German woman to reach No. 1 since Graf, her idol, in 1997.
Williams looked flat and uninspired throughout the match, possibly due to the fact she was playing for a second consecutive night. “Even if she’s losing, not playing her best, it’s always tough to beat girls like this”, said Pliskova. Pliskova has to be better on her second serve if she hopes to complete the task, but she’s now a very confident player who hasn’t lost a singles match since the Canadian Masters. Pliskova retrieved two massive shots from Williams to win a rally for a break point, but Williams reeled off the next 3 points to hold, and from there they duked it out to the tiebreak.
“It’s just incredible”, the Australian Open victor and Olympic silver medalist told the crowd on Arthur Ashe stadium.
“I always have a chance to beat anyone if I am playing my game but this is something awesome”.
She is chasing a 12th win in a row, obliterated Williams with her deadly serve and also beat Kerber only last month en route to winning the title in Cincinnati. Pliskova has won 11 straight matches on hard court.
The 10th seed will be competing in her first US Open final on Saturday, and she will face the second-seeded Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber. “Sometimes it is like this”.
Williams, who had to reach the final to have any chance of retaining top spot, relinquished the ranking to Germany’s Angelique Kerber.
“I wasn’t exhausted from yesterday’s match”.
After finishing past year ranked 10th in the world, nobody could have predicted Kerber would go through 2016 as a three-time grand slam finalist and rated the finest female player on the planet.

A seventh title at Flushing Meadows, which would have been an Open-era record, will have to wait.
