Serena Williams proud to equal Martina Navratilova record

It is an appropriate image for one of the greatest tennis players of all time, a player seemingly without peer as she topples one record after another.

For her first day match on Arthur Ashe, Williams switched from evening black to afternoon white but the change in attire did nothing to change the outcome.

Not only has she surpassed Navratilova, she matched Roger Federer´s mark for men.

After 17 trips to Flushing Meadows and six U.S. Open titles, Serena Williams did something on Thursday (September 1) she had never done before – win a match indoors.

Larsson managed to win only eight points in the second set as Williams, who turns 35 this month, brought her to heel with victor after emphatic victor. Navratilova went on to win the Open.

“It was a really good match for me, because she played a different kind of game”, Williams said.

Former men’s champions Andy Murray and Juan Martin del Potro moved into the fourth round.

Suarez, also celebrating a birthday Saturday as she turned 28, defeated Russian Elena Vesnina 6-4, 6-3.

Del Potro’s resurgence continued with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, 6-3 victory over No. 11 David Ferrer.

Williams has said that the shoulder injury has been stable thus far at the tournament, and it certainly doesn’t seem like it has effected her play.

“It’s always good to win by saving match point”. Williams argued that disparities persisted between the way male and female athletes were perceived and paid.

“I hope I can play even better than today in the next round and reach my first quarter-final here”.

The number of accomplishments Williams continues to accumulate are becoming so numbing it makes you wonder whether she is appreciated enough for what she’s done – and continues to keep doing.

Halep said in her on-court interview that she liked the calm conditions of playing indoors but she was “a little bit cold”. “It was a tough battle and I’m happy to get through”. The final score was 6-2, 6-1.

In other results, fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland beat Caroline Garcia of France (25) 6-2, 6-3, while fifth seed Simona Halep of Romania advanced in three sets, beating 31st seed Timea Babos of Hungary 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

Halep, who fell in the semi-finals to eventual champion Flavia Pennetta a year ago, will play Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro for place in the quarter-finals. In her previous matchup, Serena took down Vania King of the United States, 6-3, 6-3.

There were some concerns about Serena’s sore right shoulder. “She’s risky”, Mouratoglou said about Shvedova. Her fastest serve Saturday was 121 miles per hour, and she saved the only break point she faced against Larsson.

But she wilted under the raw power of Williams, who forced her into 32 errors and was gifted with 26 unforced miscues in the 78-minute match.
