Top seed Serena Williams gave up a wild card entry into the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Masters tournament on Monday after complaining of a shoulder injury. Williams practiced at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in the morning and then made her decision. “My shoulder inflammation continues to be a challenge”. During that match – one in which Williams double-faulted five times in one game late in the second set – she was visibly bothered by her shoulder.

Williams has been ranked world number one for 183 consecutive weeks, and 306 in total.

Japan’s Misaki Doi replaced Williams in the draw, receiving Williams’ first-round bye.

Kerber, who claimed the silver medal in Rio, would need to win the Cincinnati title outright in order to pass Williams for the top ranking. She moves into the second round and will play the victor of Monday night’s match between Saisai Zheng and Christina McHale.
