Serena wins in 2nd round at Open, but she’s not happy

Nevertheless Williams, who can move past the Open Era record she shares with Steffi Graf if she goes all the way to a 23rd Grand Slam title in NY, will step onto Arthur Ashe Stadium court an overwhelming favourite against the 47th-ranked Larsson, who has never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam.

Murray, who won the 2012 U.S. Open, had trouble in each of the first two sets, but eventually the second seed became more patient during baseline exchanges and took control for a 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory over unseeded Paolo Lorenzi.

As in the majority of her victories at the majors, Williams operated with ruthless efficiency but displayed little fire as she coolly dispatched the 47th-ranked Swede in exactly one hour.

Serena Williams had an image in mind when she designed her current tennis outfit.

“This design in particular really is kind of like a super hero design”, she explained. Like I said, I was really excited to reach that, was it 306? 307?

It would also be her 23rd grand slam win, moving her past Steffi Graf, again for the most in the Open Era, one shy of the great Margaret Court who tops the all-time list with 24.

Less than two months later promising 18-year-old Konjuh has put the past behind her and raced into the round of 16 at a major for the first time in her career. “So, yeah, that’s what I think of her”. ‘I feel like I made a lot of errors but there’s nothing I can do about that now.

“I had to stop rushing”, said Murray, who arrived at the year s final Grand Slam off victories at Wimbledon and the Rio Olympics and may have expected less from Lorenzi, the 34-year-old who only won a first ATP title in July.

She had just 17 unforced errors – in complete contrast to the whopping 63 in her first-round win.

The American veteran also revealed that she had dropped sugar from her diet in a bid to keep her in the top 10 and challenging for the majors.

But she rebounded well with her win over Belinda Bencic in round three and everything we have seen from Konta here and throughout the year would suggest she is well capable of booking a place in the last eight.

“When I got that match point I rode it all the way home”, said the elder Williams sister after her win.

“That was a number of years ago”. She was hitting very strong, so it was a good challenge for me and it was a good match.

“What she does well and what you can’t really see on the screen is that she’s mixing her tempo”, Larsson said of her groundstrokes. “Hopefully we’ll have a good match”.

Konta is never one to get carried away in public, about anything, and she is just focused on what’s in front of her.

Williams noted that female tennis players had been at the forefront of trying to achieve equality in their sport, and she said it was important for them to push for similar conditions for other female athletes.
