Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl arraigned in court
The disgraced soldier wore an Army dress uniform with a dark blue jacket and trousers and had closely cropped hair. More video released by the Taliban shows the moment Bergdahl steps out of the back of a pickup truck, blinking as the sun hits his face.

The way Bergdahl tells it, he was deeply concerned about the leadership in his brigade, to the point he says he believed his comrades’ lives were at risk.
Bergdahl was arraigned during a short hearing and deferred entering a plea.
According to CNN, Tuesday’s proceedings lasted about 11 minutes, and there were about 50 individuals in the courtroom. Critics said that Barack Obama’s decision to exchange Bergdahl for Guantánamo detainees jeopardized the safety of the nation.
His decision to voluntarily leave the base has raised questions about what happened that night, and eventually led to Bergdahl being formally charged with “desertion and misbehavior before the enemy” earlier this year. Penalties for convictions at those trials, on charges typically similar to misdemeanors, are capped at one year in prison and a bad-conduct discharge.
Bergdahl, who was held captive by the Taliban for five years before returning to the USA after a controversial trade for five Taliban officials being held at Guantánamo, has been charged with desertion and misbehavior in front of the enemy. And as part of Bergdahl’s release, the White House agreed to release five Taliban prisoners held at Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay detention camp. He returned to the United States two weeks later.
At the time, Bergdahl’s defense attorney, Eugene Fidell, said in a statement that the defense team “hoped the case would not go in this direction”.
He said Bergdahl was unrealistically idealistic, but not a Taliban sympathiser. The interviews with Boal have provided the storyline for the second season of the popular podcast “Serial”. And he wanted to prove himself as a real-life action hero, like someone out of a movie. You know, I could be, you know, what…
He said he was spotted by six men armed with AK-47s and travelling on motorcycles.
“Yes, sir. I do”, Bergdahl replied several times to Fredrikson’s inquires, confirming he understood the charges against him and the future court-martial process.

Huffman was surprised the more serious general court-martial was chosen, but he said the approach will allow the court to thoroughly consider the case with all punishments available.
