Officials said they couldn’t immediately say whether Ruhl had time to let others know by radio that he was in trouble, or whether flames overtook him too fast to call for help.

Dave’s permanent position is Engine Captain on the Mystic Ranger District of the Black Hills National Forest in Rapid City.

One fire, the “Frog Fire” in Modoc County, is blamed for the death of a U.S. Forest Service firefighter. Efforts resumed Friday, when his body was found.

“This loss of life is tragic and heartbreaking”, said Forest Service supervisor Amanda McAdams. Its members, who have experience in areas of fire management, law enforcement, human performance and more, will begin their work on August 3.

Fire officials say a massive blaze raging in the Lower Lake area north of San Francisco spread overnight covering more drought-stricken ground.

Further details about the circumstances surrounding Ruhl’s death were not immediately available. “Firefighter Ruhl will be remembered for his service and bravery and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues with the U.S. Forest Service”.

Ruhl is survived by his wife, Erin, and two children. He joined the Forest Service in 2001 and had been with Black Hills National Forest since 2011, Jacobson said.

David Ruhl, 38, was on temporary assignment with the Big Valley Ranger District of the Modoc National Forest when he went missing Thursday in hazardous fire conditions.

Prior to becoming a firefighter, Ruhl had served in the U.S Coast Guard and worked as a correctional officer in the state of South Dakota.
