Sesame Street’s first HBO season will premiere on January 16th

Now that first HBO season – Sesame Street’s 46th – has a premiere date: January 16th, 2016. PBS countered with the sobering facts of decreased federal funding that would likely have led to less “Sesame Street” in general rather than just a nine-month delay for new episodes.

Aimed at pre-schoolers, “Sesame Street” created Muppets like Elmo that have become cultural icons around the world.

And if the preschooler in your life doesn’t have HBO (or, let’s be real, if you’re looking for a little “Sunny Days” comfort on a sick day), the show will continue to air on PBS, though the new episodes won’t be coming to the Public Broadcasting Service until next fall. Older episodes will be available on-demand on HBO’s streaming service, HBO Now, as well as HBO On Demand through pay-TV systems.

Two episodes will debut at 9:00 a.m. (ET) Saturday, January 16, with new episodes debuting in the same time-slot each Saturday thereafter.

The brand new 30-minute format will feature new segments, cast members, opening numbers, and even a brand new set from that which Sesame Street fans have been accustomed!

“Families will see fun and fresh changes to Sesame Street and can depend on their favorite Muppet friends to provide them with engaging and educational content”, Brown Johnson, executive VP and creative director, Sesame Workshop, said.

Celeb visitors on tap for Season 46 include Gwen Stefani, Pharrell, Nick Jonas, Sara Bareilles, Alan Cumming (The Good Wife), Tracee Ellis Ross (black-ish) and Gina Rodriguez (Jane the… something).

The show is also adding a new character – Nina, a bilingual Hispanic young woman who will be played by Suki Lopez!
