Seven injured in homecoming crash on DSU campus

Seven people were injured when an alleged drunk driver drove his auto into a crowd on the campus of Delaware State University, reports CBS Philly.

Dover Police said in a statement that Gregory Ligon, 28, of Mitchelville, Maryland parked his vehicle and left the auto in reverse when he got out, sending the vehicle towards the picnic area where a fraternity event was taking place. According to police, Ligon quickly went back in the driver’s seat to stop the vehicle and pushed the gas pedal instead of the brake. The driver’s side door was open at the time, and police say one woman was seriously injured when she was pinned between the door and a tree.

In the Delaware State University incident, a Wilmington woman was critically injured, guests were directed to leave the campus and remaining homecoming activities were canceled, Master Cpl. At that point, police said, bystanders helped Ligon out of the auto, and it was discovered that he was drunk. She was rushed to Christiana Hospital in critical condition.

The vehicle struck a total of seven people including a 51-year-old male from Philadelphia, a 20-year-old female from Egg Harbor Township, two 21-year-old females from Wilmington, a 21-year-old male from Dover, a 21-year-old female from Upper Marbor, Maryland, and a 22-year-old female from Brooklyn.

Six other adults were treated at Bayhealth Kent General for foot, leg, hand and shoulder injuries.

Ligon was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, police said, and faces multiple charges including first and second degree vehicular assault.

The investigation into the crash is being led by the Dover Police Department, with assistance from Delaware State University Police.
