The Hawker Hunter single-seat jets were first built in the 1950s, in Belgium and Netherlands and also served in the Indian Air Force. Witnesses say the jet appeared to have plummeted when it failed to pull out of a loop maneuver. Others who were injured have all now been treated for their injuries.

Elsewhere, two small planes have crashed at an air show in Dittingen, Switzerland, killing at least one person.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Barry said they are unable to determine whether pilot Andy Hill ejected from the plane before the impact as they are unable to question him while he remains in a “critical condition”.

He said: “It is very emotional for us”.

“The Prime Minister’s thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims”.

Describing both men as essential members of last season’s double-winning squad, the club said: “At this point, we don’t know how or if we will cope with this”.

Footage and pictures of the incident can also be sent to police, who urged people to contact them on [email protected].police.uk before sending any files.

West Sussex Police said seven died at the scene and one patient with life-threatening injuries was taken to the hospital.

This is a tragic accident and I think what we shouldn’t do is very knee-jerk reactions to “should we be banning all airshows”.

The A27 road remained closed as the recovery continues, police said in a statement.

This is the second major incident at the Shoreham Airshow, which has been running for 26 years.

The 24-year-old personal trainer from Littlehampton, West Sussex, is thought to have been driving along the rod in his silver BMW with a pal when the tragedy happened.

Carson Albury, chairman of Adur District Council said: “It has really touched everyone and I really feel for the people who were at the airport yesterday and saw the event take place and of course the families of those affected”.

Anyone concerned for unaccounted relatives can call 01273 470101.

The crash site is “extremely large”, Mr Barry said, and is spread over 400 yards of the A27 and into the adjoining airfield.
