Thames Valley Police confirmed officers are at the scene but have not released further details.

Witnesses described hearing a loud bang before parts of the building collapsed.

According to ITV, at least one person died and there may be more casualties. What’s left looks a tangled mess. Television pictures showed half a large building at the site appeared to have collapsed.

The gas-fired power station, Didcot B, was next to the collapsed plant, but it was not the site of the explosion, The Guardian reported.

The disused coal-fired power station ceased generating in 2013 and three enormous cooling towers were demolished at the site in 2014.

Twitter users have described an “explosion” as well as “loads of dust”.

Eyewitnesses told The Independent there were fears people were inside the building at the time of the explosion around 4pm.

British police are confirming reports of an explosion at a power station about 55 miles northwest of London.

He added: “I am very concerned there may have been casualties”.
