In response, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., introduced legislation on Monday afternoon that would suspend issuance of visas to refugees from countries with a high risk of terrorism until the U.S. Department of Homeland Security meets certain standards. “It’s not that we don’t want to; it’s that we can’t because there’s no way to background check someone that’s coming from Syria”.
“It is irresponsible and severely disconcerting to place individuals, who may have ties to ISIS, in a state without the state’s knowledge or involvement”, Jindal said in his letter Saturday. “As we work with our allies to defeat ISIS without endangering American lives in another civil war, we must maintain and expand rigorous screening and security checks for any Syrian refugee fleeing terrorism by seeking to enter our country”. They’re being beheaded, they’re being executed by both sides. “And I think we have a responsibility to help”.
“They are parents, they are children, they are orphans”, President Obama said on Monday.
Obama also called a comments made by a few Republican presidential candidates, such as Ted Cruz, that the USA should no longer accept refugees from Syria, or only accept Christians, as “shameful”.
Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin says his colleagues across the nation who say they won’t allow Syrian refugees into their states are “stomping on the qualities that make America great”.
Republican presidential contender Ben Carson, a retired brain surgeon, said that from the viewpoint of the Islamic State group, it would be “almost malpractice” not to do everything possible to infiltrate the refugee ranks with militants bent on waging jihad.
Authorities said a Syrian passport was found near one of the attackers in Friday’s deadly attacks, and the Paris prosecutors’ office says fingerprints from the attacker match those of someone who passed through Greece in October. It was not clear whether the document was real or forged. “It would be incumbent on people to prove who they are so that we would be certain because we can’t be in a position of inviting the enemy in”, Kasich told Fox News on Sunday.
“We must find a way to balance our tradition as a state welcoming of refugees while ensuring the safety and security of our citizens”, he said in a statement. “Now, on the other hand, Christians who are being targeted for genocide or persecution, Christians who are being beheaded or crucified, we should be providing safe haven to them”.
Lavinia Limon, president and CEO of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigration, said under the Refugee Act of 1980 governors can not legally block refugees.
“We haven’t underestimated their abilities”, he said.
Colorado’s governor isn’t ruling out Syrian refugees in the wake of terror attacks in Paris.
IL is one of the growing number of states who have, at least temporarily, stopped accepting refugees from Syria.
“It’s also important to remember that these attacks are the efforts of extremists and do not reflect the peaceful ways of people of Middle Eastern descent here and around the world”, he said.
Rubio on Sunday said that was impossible.

“As governor, I oppose any facility or installation in Arkansas being used as a Syrian refugee center”. “We want to be an opening and welcoming place for people around the world”.
