“The next round of storms Saturday afternoon through Saturday night could be strong to severe, with large hail, damaging wind gusts and torrential rainfall the main threats”, the weather service reported Friday. It won’t take much of a northward shift to put us in a significant severe weather threat area, so this will definitely be my forecast focus tomorrow. Big storms are expected to form tonight far to our northwest over northern Montana and southern Saskatchewan.

Today’s forecast calls for partly sunny skies with a high of 83 and a 10 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m.

The threat for storms will be greatest from after sunset through just after midnight.

This afternoon’s severe weather threat is almost identical to the one two Saturdays ago, when we also had a cold front barreling right into a hot, steamy airmass. If the atmosphere can recover late Wednesday afternoon and evening, another eruption of storms with all modes of severe weather will be possible. The 4km NAM shows storms across central IL early Thursday morning.

If the low keeps to the south, the risk for severe weather decreases significantly, but heavy rain remains a strong possibility.

Remember…a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.

Although we are expecting some storms to become strong/severe in Kentuckiana this week, the highest risk of widespread wind damage will lie north of our region, closer to Chicago, Indianapolis, and Dayton.
