Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Luzerne County

NEW YORK, NY – National weather officials have warned New Yorkers to brace themselves for a possibly “severe” thunderstorm expected to travel over the five boroughs between 4:15 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Monday, July 25. “Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour are possible, with localized higher amounts.” .

The flash flood warning lasts until 8 p.m. Monday, the service said.

Remember that a severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for severe storms but not a guarantee.

The warning is in effect until 9:30 a.m. Areas mentioned in the warning include Arcade, Warsaw, and Letchworth State Park.

Yesterday may be added to the list of 90 degree days which comprise our latest heat wave, now numbering four days. The high at the airport hit 96 Saturday and 90 degrees on Sunday. The intense heat coupled with high humidity increases the risk for heat-related health issues, especially for the elderly and those who suffer from chronic health problems. Heat index values for Long Island are expected to be around 95, the service said.

Although still hot, Tuesday and Wednesday’s heat may be slightly more manageable. An area of low pressure is forecast to slowly meander into the region, suggesting murky, hazy sunshine with high humidity and the chance for on and off thunderstorms.
