Severe weather likely this afternoon and evening

Meteorologists said the tornado that destroyed the Morning Apartments and other homes and damaged a GE plant was an EF3, with winds about 135 mph at its peak and was on the ground for 8 miles.

Extensive damage to nearby trees, some of which fell on houses, was attributed to straight-line winds, which leave trees uprooted and lying in the same general direction. Almost 16,000 customers north of Lancaster County are without power in the wake of the storms as well.

There were also severe thunderstorm warnings in effect across the state.

Many areas received between 1 to 2 inches of rainfall since Monday evening. The low at night expected to be near 27.

Once a Tornado Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service, it’s important to get to a safe spot immediately. Wind gusts were reported at over 115 mph and mobile homes were destroyed about 5 miles west of Purvis.

The winds will kick up the surf on beaches south of Cape Hatteras. The widespread nature of the heavy rain will also cause elevated levels and flow on main stem rivers.

All told, Montgomery received just over a half inch of rain (0.6 inches to be exact) and zero tornado activity. Remember, a watch means severe weather is possible.
