The perpetrators put up pictures and a video of the girl on Twitter, sparking a nationwide backlash.

Police also said Friday they are asking for the public’s help to track down the four men and identify the others.

According to a statement the girl gave to the police, she had gone to her boyfriend’s house in a poor community in western Rio on Saturday, only to regain consciousness later, surrounded by the men.

Though police have issued arrest warrants for the culprits, including the boyfriend, angry campaigners took to Twitter to voice outrage at the country’s “culture of rape”. The next thing she remembered was waking up naked on Sunday morning in another house with the group of armed men. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article. A 40-second video showing the assault was widely shared, followed by misogynistic comments, the BBC reported, adding that the accounts of the users were suspended. “It’s a depressing situation”, she told Folha de São Paulo newspaper.

The girl’s grandmother told the same paper she watched the video, saying: “I regretted watching it. When we heard the story we didn’t believe what was happening”. It’s a great affliction.
