Shane Lowry: ‘I feel comfortable at Oakmont’

After three rounds of the weather delayed US Open 2016, Shane Lowry pulled off a remarkable Round 3 by finishing 5-under-par to top the leaderboard at 7-under-par for the tournament.

Lee Westwood can still be considered the dark horse of the competition with his 2-under-par. The four holes he played Sunday morning to wrap up the third round were all about setting the stage for the afternoon.

“I’m glad we didn’t have to play another four holes as I was getting exhausted but I’m really looking forward to getting out there on Sunday”, Lowry, 41, said at the end of the day, according to the BBC.

A par at the 18th completed a one-over 71 for Johnson, as Landry booked his spot in the final group by holing a 45-footer at the same hole to add to his birdie at the previous hole.

The news that Johnson had been informed of the post-round review was widely criticised, with f our-time major victor Rory McIlroy writing on Twitter: “This is ridiculous…”

The Northern Ireland star, who won the US Open in 2011, was charging early in the second round with four birdies in his first seven holes.

“I just need to put four of them together”, Lowry had said after an opening 68.

He sunk a 45ft birdie putt on the 18th green early on Sunday morning to finish off an even-par 70 that left the Texan three-under for the tournament and four shots behind the leader, Lowry. Johnson has 11 top 10s in majors but is still searching for his first victory.

“I’ve been in contention in a lot in major championships so it’s helped me a lot”, the 43-year-old said. That’s all I want to do. Daniel Summerhays drove the 17th green and made eagle for a 69 to join Westwood at five shots back.

Branden Grace is one under in sixth and Sergio Garcia and Scott Piercy sit at even par.

“I hit a big drive down 15 and only had a nine iron in there, hit it pretty close and made that, hit a lovely pitch on 17 and a really good save on the last”. One of the best rounds of my career, 65 on this golf course against these guys. It’s the first time since the 2014 PGA Championship that Spieth was not within at least two shots of the lead going into the last round of a major.

Cameron Smith offset five third-round birdies with the same number of bogeys to sit six over, while Marc Leishman remarkably couldn’t make one birdie in a round of 77 that left him seven over.

After a week of catch up caused by three rain delays and finally a suspension of play on Thursday, this U.S. Open is finally off the clock and back in position.
