Sharif’s UN speech a monumental error of judgement

In his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday, September 21, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif mostly talked about the Kashmir conflict.

Responding to the questions of media personnel on Uri attack, Sharif said, “it was uncalled for to blame Pakistan for attack on Indian army”.

Foreign Secretary Jaishankar also said that these attacks were a latest in a series of provocative acts launched across the border.

The neighbors are now locked in a war of words that has raised bilateral tensions over Kashmir, the cause of two of the three wars between India and Pakistan since they both gained independence from Britain in 1947.

It is true that the United Nations passed a resolution on Kashmir in 1948, calling on both Pakistan and India to demilitarize their parts of the valley and hold a plebiscite. “The people of Pakistan and Kashmiris in the occupied valley were happy on strongly pleading the case of Kashmir”, they added.

Pakistani defence forces have readied an “operational plan” to give a befitting response to any “misadventure from war-mongering India” and targets in India have also been selected for an immediate quid pro quo, a Pakistani daily said on Friday quoting defence sources.

Pakistan has rejected the allegation and accused India of apportioning blame before the incident had been investigated properly. “Even today we have heard support by the Prime Minister of Pakistan for a self-acknowledged commander of a known terrorist organisation”, she said.

“The worldwide community ignores the danger of rising tensions in South Asia at its own peril”.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police has handed over to NIA the call details and internet data usage of all active cellphones and broadband connections in Uri town for the period of 24 hours prior to daring attack on the army base, the sources said. He was told that India has evidence showing involvement of Pakistan-based terrorists in the Uri attack and demanded that Islamabad refrain from supporting and sponsoring terrorism directed against this country.

“Pakistan is fully prepared to meet any military challenge from India”.

The NIA along with technical experts from other security agencies is also trying to retrieve data from the Global Positioning System (GPS) sets recovered from the slain militants.
