“This is the first recorded predation event I know in the San Francisco Bay”, said David McGuire, Director of the San Francisco-based conservation group Shark Stewards and research associate at the California Academy of Sciences, in a press release.

“That’s a great white!” He relates movement of these sharks with that of the warming ocean caused by the El Niño weather pattern, which were once in abundance are now seen empty.

During the years that Alcatraz was a state prison, prisoners were regularly told that the Bay around Alcatraz was full of great white sharks. “That’s the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life!” says a young boy whose world was just rocked.

The shark splashed in the bloody waters as it attacked its prey, just feet away from the dock. ‘That’s pretty scary, actually!’

‘It’s actually a sign that maybe the San Francisco Bay is getting a little healthier, that you have top predators like white sharks coming in, ‘ McGuire said.

Surfer Nick Lee was also surprised about the shark.
