Sharks C Couture suffers broken leg

The left-shooting centre/wing fractured his fibula during practice prior to San Jose’s matchup with the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, earning him a likely scratch from the game on Friday evening that quickly turned to a confirmed scratch with the diagnosis of the broken bone.

The Sharks will be without the services of Logan Couture for at least a month. After taking several moments to sit up, he was helped off of the ice by teammates Brent Burns and Brenden Dillon, and was putting no weight on his right leg. Couture later was seen on crutches and wearing a protective boot on his right foot and ankle.

“With this type of organizational depth, they should be able to sustain their strong play throughout the season even when the inevitable injury bug decides to hit”.

Through three games of the 2015-16 National Hockey League season, it has not seemed like much can derail the San Jose Sharks: 12-1 goal differential in road and home wins over Pacific Division rivals followed by a win to start their Eastern Conference road trip.

Couture, the Sharks second-leading scorer last season, is in his seventh season with the Sharks and has one goal in three games.

General manager Doug Wilson said Friday the break at the right ankle happened in New Jersey on Thursday.

Two teams that have gotten off to completely different starts face off Friday as the unbeaten San Jose Sharks visit the winless New Jersey Devils. Tomas Hertl replaced Couture at center on a line with Marleau and Ward and picked up an assist…. Devils defenseman Andy Greene had hooked the Sharks’ forward as he broke in for a shot, which he got off and Schneider handled.

“We haven’t spent a lot of time on it. It’s a reality, and he’s out until he’s back”.

The Sharks called up 2014 first-round pick Nikolay Goldobin from the AHL.

“That was one of the better games for us”, Hynes said after earning his first point as a coach. He had a career-high 67 points last season.
