Patrick Marleau (12) is stopped by Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury whle shooting in the first period of an NHL hockey game, Saturday, November 21, 2015, in Pittsburgh.
With just one second left in the first of Pavelski’s penalties, Phil Kessel swept in a loose puck from the front lip of the crease for his seventh for the season.
“You never know what it’s about until it’s actually done and over with”, Marleau said.
“I think we had a few good looks”, Kessel said. “They just didn’t go in tonight”.
Marleau had the secondary assist on a goal by Brent Burns 7:54 into the game. He spent five years with Pittsburgh and was one of the Penguins’ most reliable defensemen last season.
Patrick Marleau said for days that he just wanted to get it over and done with. It was coming off back-to-back wins with four goals each but could not sustain its stretch of multiple-goal games despite running up a season-high 39 shots against San Jose, which blocked 22 shot attempts.
This was the first game in the past 15 in the Penguins-Sharks series that was won by the road team in regulation.
Marleau entered Saturday with 11 points in 19 games this season.
The Sharks will recognize Marleau’s achievement December 1 when they host the Penguins. He was drafted second overall in 1997 – a draft that was held in Pittsburgh, in the now-razed Civic Arena. The only other player to register their 1,000th career point against Pittsburgh was New Jersey’s Joe Nieuwendyk in 2003….
Patrick Marleau recorded his 1000 career National Hockey League point in the city that he was drafted in by the Sharks more than 18 years ago.
“I saw a couple signs”.
37 – The number of regular-season games since Patric Hornqvist last registered a power-play goal.
Marleau picked up the second assist on the only goal of the period, as he fed a pass to teammate Joel Ward in the right circle to trigger a scoring sequence.
The Penguins managed to erase a 1-0 deficit when Kessel scored a goal at 8:38 of the second period.
