Shashank manohar steps down as bcci president

Shashank Manohar has resigned as president of India’s cricket board, and is therefore free to run for election as the next International Cricket Council chairman. He won’t be BCCI representative at Asian Cricket Council (ACC) too. “Shashank Manohar had to quit BCCI President because the SC is about to hear my SLP where I have shown his complicity with Lalit Modi”, Swamy tweeted.

He had been re-appointed for the second time to head-up India’s cricket board following the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya last October. However, the new rules of the ICC call for an independent chairman – one who does not hold a dual role.

In his last statements, he thanked his friends and staffs for their support and help in Trial.

“BCCI has grown revenue-wise and is paying 70% of revenue generated through World Cup matches played in India to International Cricket Council (ICC). I wish all of you all the very best in taking the cause of Cricket to greater heights”, he added.

The result of the ballot to find the new ICC chairman is expected to be known by the end of this month.

Manohar – who is also the current ICC chairman – has stepped down with immediate effect to enable him to run for re-election with cricket’s governing body in an independent capacity.

NCP heavyweight and MCA president Sharad Pawar is likely set to return as the BCCI boss. With Dalmiya’s passing (September 21, 2015) and Manohar’s resignation (May 10, 2016), the BCCI is facing a peculiar situation of being asked to elect a third president in 16 months.

Manohar’s exit, which was being intensely speculated, has not gone down too well with a sizable section of the BCCI top brass, which strongly feels that he has left them in the lurch.

According to the Board’s constitution, a Special General Meeting needs to be convened, within the next 15 days, to.

The ICC election will be overseen by the body’s independent audit committee chairman and all present and past ICC directors will be eligible to contest.
