Network Rail said that from 10.30am today it was able to run trains on all lines at the scene of the bridge collapse.

Passengers are still warned to check their trains before travelling.

Rail passengers face major disruptions between London and the East Midlands today after a bridge partially collapsed.

It happened in Leicestershire and Network Rail says it is doing all it can to restore services across the county and into Lincolnshire. It was claimed that workmen had been drilling on the structure shortly before the incident.

It has emerged that contractors were working at the site as part of an assessment of the condition of the bridge, which local people had pointed out had been “sinking” at road level for some time.

Services between London and the East Midlands were worst affected with no trains between London and Nottingham, Sheffield or Leicester. We’re sorry for any continuing disruption caused to passengers, who are advised to check service details before they travel.

The bridge is in an area liable to subsidence and engineers are now working to make the area safe and clear the line, which is expected to remain closed for the remainder of Tuesday.

If you are travelling to/from Nottingham you will need to change onto a London route train to connect with the replacement bus service to/from East Midlands Parkway.

But by Tuesday afternoon the train operator conceded: “As it stands we do not expect the line to reopen today”.
