A manhunt is underway in downtown Fort Lauderdale, where an inmate facing the death penalty escaped while waiting for a court hearing on Friday morning.

Four people have been arrested on charges of aiding in the escape of a 21-year-old murder suspect from the Broward County courthouse.

On Friday morning, three helicopters, K-9 officers and officers from Fort Lauderdale police and deputies from the Broward Sheriff’s Office swarmed the streets around 201 SE Sixth Street between Southeast Third Avenue and South Andrews Avenue.

Sheriff’s deputies set up a perimeter within minutes of the escape, but Resiles had already fled the area by then, Israel said.

According to Stern’s arrest report, the escape was planned and included a rental auto, a change of clothes, including a police uniform, boots and a gun belt.

Israel said authorities were following various leads, but Resiles still eluded them.

Sheriff Israel adds: “We are actively serving a search warrant and applying for search warrants as we speak”.

It is still unknown how Resiles shed his handcuffs and leg shackles.

“We will look at every aspect of this escape”, he said.

Attorney Jim Lewis was in Judge Raag Singhal’s courtroom when Resiles, who is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds, made his dash for freedom.

Stern and Russell are charged with escape and accessory after the fact to capital murder and are being held without bail at the Broward County Jail.
