‘Sherlock’ to receive US theatrical release

In a recent tweet by Masterpiece PBS, the network spilled both the release date and title of the one-off special, building Sherlockians’ excitement.

Over the weekend BBC confirmed there will be a fourth series of Sherlock, and it begins filming in London this spring.

Despite the fact that the Sherlock special will be available to almost everyone right at the comfort of their own homes on January 1, 2015, the show’s producers most likely thought that not everyone would be able to watch it due to hangovers or because of the holiday itself which will be cutting into viewership.

Writer and actor Mark Gatiss added to Digital Spy: ” It’s a Christmas ghost story, a Christmas treat”.

The Abominable Bride is set to air on the 1st of January, 2016. Even the synopsis from Entertainment Weekly, courtesy of PBS, only spilled the setting of the special, but did not reveal much information.

Before we start to get into the rest of this “Sherlock” article, let’s start with what is a minor pet peeve for us at this point: Why are people still referring to upcoming special as a Christmas Special, when in reality it is airing on New Year’s Day?

The special features Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman reprising their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. “Beloved characters Mary Morstan (played by Amanda Abbington), Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) and Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) also turn up at 221b Baker Street”. Doyle stories that are scary chillers we haven’t done much.

“The Abominable Bride” will air on BBC One – and in selected cinemas around the country – on New Year’s Day 2016, and Amanda has stated that it will be a “proper gothic horror”. For us, it’s a giant leap backwards – into Victorian London.
