Shields roughed up by Machado, Orioles; White Sox fall 10-2

Baltimore Orioles’ Manny Machado, left, celebrates with Chris Davis after hitting a two-run home run against the Chicago White Sox during the first inning of a baseball game in Chicago, Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016.

Machado became the second player in major league history to homer in the first, second and third innings, driving in a career-high seven runs in a 10-2 rout of James Shields and the Chicago White Sox. Manny Machado has hit 128 times with 73 runs, 22 homers and 60 RBI.

White Sox starter Carlos Rodon, worked out of a first-inning jam with three strikeouts while hitting 100 miles per hour on the radar gun.

Reds 7, Pirates 3: Major league steals leader Billy Hamilton swiped four bases, had three hits and scored three runs, leading Cincinnati past Pittsburgh.

Rodon allowed five hits, walked two and struck out seven in six innings.

Heading into the fourth inning of a road contest against the Chicago White Sox, the Baltimore Orioles star was sitting pretty with three home runs.

D’backs 9, Brewers 3: Jake Lamb and Phil Gosselin each hit two-run homers during a five-run fifth inning to lead Arizona over Milwaukee.

“The team hasn’t been swinging it like we have in the past so, it was a great day to see everything have consistent at-bats and consistent swings”, Machado said. In his previous two starts, the rookie took a no-hitter into the sixth inning.

Jose Abreu hit his third homer in four days for the White Sox, who have dropped eight of 11. I was leaving the ball over the plate, and they were capitalizing on it.

“I think the umpire got blocked out a little bit by Machado”, White Sox center fielder Adam Eaton said.

Signs of life: While Shields (and Friday’s starter Miguel Gonzalez, though not quite as badly) struggled, Carlos Rodon was strong in Saturday’s win as he gave up only one earned run, something he hadn’t done since May 28.

“As you can see, I missed a few spots”, Bundy said. Fifty-something games is still a long time.

“Once we got down that much, it was going to be hard to come back because Bundy was just as tough on the other side”, Ventura said. “(Machado) just single-handedly put us in a hole”. Ubaldo Jiminez pitched three ideal innings for his first career save.

“I was trying”, Machado said. You’ve got a guy that was extremely hot today and is one of the best players in the game.

Machado grounded into a double play against Tommy Kahnle in the fifth and flew out against Carson Fulmer in the seventh inning.

Most of that damage came off pitcher James Shields, who recorded four outs and allowed eight runs.

Eaton hit a solo homer in the eighth, while Tyler Saldino also homered and Melky Cabrera added an RBI double for the White Sox, who won for the third time in 10 games.
