Shimon Peres in intensive care after stroke

Former Israeli President Shimon Peres has been transferred to intensive care after suffering a major stroke Tuesday. He said Peres had regained limited consciousness and was responsive to simple instructions. The question was what kind of damage was sustained and what kind of recovery he could make, Walden said.

The 93-year-old Mr. Peres, the last of Israel’s so-called founding fathers, was in a medically induced coma in Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv, the spokesman said.

“We are moving him to the intensive care unit of the neurology department for further treatment and observation”.

Kreiss said the stroke had caused “lots of bleeding”.

Doctors described Peres as being “in a critical condition but stable”, the BBC reported Wednesday. In January, he had undergone a successful minor surgery at the same hospital after suffering a small heart attack. It was the first peace agreement between the two principal parties to the conflict: Israelis and Palestinians.

The Associated Press covered the story throughout the night and said that Peres “cultivated an image as the country’s elder statesman and became one of its most popular public figures”.

In a career spanning almost seven decades, Peres, 93, served in a dozen cabinets and twice as a Labour Party prime minister, even though he never won a general election outright in five tries from 1977 to 1996.

He was also the architect of Israel’s secret nuclear programme. His office said Peres received a pacemaker last week.

As word of his stroke spread, Peres was showered with well wishes from political friends and foes alike.

“Shimon, we love you and the entire nation is wishing for your recovery”, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement.
