Wenger, who looks certain to add Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi and Deportivo La Caruna striker Lucas Perez to his ranks in the coming days, likened Xhaka to a former Arsenal favourite and revealed the club had made a move for him a year ago.

Given the injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel, it was imperative that Wenger acted and brought in a new defender, and he has now seemingly finally landed his preferred target.

Despite them jumping the gun, the move is expected to go through without a hitch.

Meanwhile, Mustafi’s arrival has already had a knock-on effect, after it was confirmed by Sky Sports on Twitter that Calum Chambers has joined Middlesbrough on loan for the rest of the season.

“I talked to Mesut – he told me everything I wanted to know”, he said.

The 24-year-old is set to sign for Arsenal this week on a five-year deal for a fee which could rise to 35 million pounds ($45.8 million), with head coach Arsene Wenger revealing that deals for the Germany worldwide and Lucas Perez are nearly complete.

Reflecting on his new partnership with the Swiss, Cazorla told Arsenal Player: “I feel very well [next to him]”. It did not take much.

Germany’s defender Shkodran Mustafi (R) celebrates with Germany’s midfielder Mesut Oezil after scoring a goal during the Euro 2016 group C football match between Germany and Ukraine at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Villeneuve-d’Ascq near Lille on June 12, 2016.

Mustafi is also close to completing his transfer to Arsenal.

“He likes to sit, give good long balls and be available for the centre-backs”.

Still only 20, Wenger would not like to put too many first-team responsibilities on the shoulders of young Holding, who is still learning his trade.
