Shobhaa De hails ‘hero’ PV Sindhu’s Olympic feat

Today, however, the company has given every customer in India a reason to smile, as the cab hailing service has switched its cars with shuttlecocks to celebrate PV Sindhu’s silver win at the Olympics! “I am really very happy that the Asian dominance has been finally broken”, stated the current World No. 1. Her grace in defeat when she refused to be drawn into discussions on her opponent Carolina Marin’s gamesmanship in frequently changing shuttles to upset her rhythm is further vindication of the spirit with which she has learnt to play the game and the manner in which she has been groomed by a master coach. It was anybody’s game. I’m very proud of the fact that she gave it all she had.

After taking it match by match, we had chose to give off our best with the one last shot at the gold medal.

Padma Bhushan recipient Pullela Gopichand, the coach of the Silver medalist said she has made him proud and she gave her best. Sindhu has stepped up to the plate by honing her skills to a higher, attacking plane in which her 5-foot 11-inch frame and reach is backed by agility and the mental strength to hang in there in extended rallies and at such a young age at that.

India yesterday swelled with pride after badminton champion P.V. Sindhu became the first woman in the country’s history to win an Olympic silver medal. But we must acknowledge that Marin played a great game under pressure. There will be ups and downs in sport like in life.

After Saina Nehwal left the academy was there any pressure on you to prove a point or two? I would like to congratulate everyone. I thought it would be gold. I really worked hard. In the final, Marin, despite losing the first game, not once played like anything less than the favourite she was; thereby she cast a confirmatory glow on Sindhu’s challenge. It’s been a wonderful week for me. This is my first Olympics and I have won a silver medal. One has to win and one has to lose. So it was her day on Friday. She’s doing a great job. When asked to comment on the warnings received by both the players for time wasting tactics, Carolina just shrugged it off. “I told her don’t think that you lost it”. She’s been fantastic in all the four matches and she’s fought well in the final as well. “There were simple errors from my side”, she explained.
