Shocked audience members pass out at horror movie screening

Apparently Julia Ducournau’s Raw, which had its global premiere on Monday as part TIFF’s Midnight Madness program, was so disturbing, a couple of moviegoers passed out at the late-night screening.

RAW was screened at this year’s edition of the Cannes Film Festival without incident. The film was apparently so gruesome that the moviegoers couldn’t handle it. That’s great for fans.well, except for the ones who got sick during that screening.

With all the current hullabaloo around that film, it’s interesting to note that another movie revolving around cannibalism, Ana Lily Amirpour’sThe Bad Batch, also had its North American premiere at TIFF this week before being picked up for US distribution by Screen Media Films.

“Raw” is the first feature film by French writer-director Julia Ducournau. According to reports (and a rather gleeful press release from the film’s marketing team) medical help had to be sought when “the film became too much” for some attendees to the screening. I don’t know too much else about the film beyond that, and truth be told, I’m a little afraid to look it up. I want to see where they will be reacting.

Multiple audience members passing out may be the best marketing the film’s received since it’s hit the festival tour.

A TIFF spokesperson verified the news to Global: “We can confirm two patrons did feel unwell during the screening of Raw on Tuesday night, one of which required the assistance of the emergency services.”. When I rephrased the question for clarity (“Is there a possibility the movie makers could have set this up without your knowledge to promote the movie”?), the rep wrote back: “We work with industry professionals with trust and professionalism”.

Just a little joke, you see.
