Shonda Rhimes Finally Dishes On Why Derek Shepherd On ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Died!

However, it looks like Rhimes is clearing the air saying that she felt that the only way to keep the bond between Meredith Grey and Derek untainted was for him to die. You think, ‘How can the show go on?’ But that’s how the writers find inspiration.

Rhimes copped widespread backlash from fans of the beloved series after she killed off McDreamy last season in a sudden auto crash, but the creator of the hit ABC drama defended her decision, explaining that, after Dempsey decided to move on from the show, there was no other option but to kill-off his character.

McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey) was killed off in the 11th season of the show.

So, how exactly will Derek’s death affect the Season 12 storyline of “Grey’s Anatomy”? Rimes was at the Television Critics Association summer press tour held in Beverly Hills, CA and she revealed that Callie and Arizona will be venturing into more exciting romances.

“Meredith and Derek’s love had to remain Meredith and Derek’s love”. And she’s got three kids, so I guess to dive into her kids and work is the most logical place.

Another question that comes to mind, especially with the casting of Martin Henderson, is if Meredith will stay single?

“In order for a one-hour drama to continue, there has to be big upheavals”, Pompeo told Us Weekly. News. “Meredith is in a rebirth and she’s evolving”. I actually don’t know what the fan response was, because I knew enough to know that I was going to write Derek’s death and I was not going to go online for a while. “That was going to suggest that their love was not true, that the thing we said for 11 years was a lie, and McDreamy wasn’t McDreamy”, Rhimes said. “I just hope it goes for as long as they all want it to”. That’s not really the point. “Meredith’s on a journey, she’s always been a journey and I’m taking her where the journey leads her, so we’ll see what that feels like”.
