Shooting Deaths Of Law Enforcement Spike In 2016

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund reported Tuesday that Texas surpassed its USA -leading total of 12 deaths previous year.

That’s just one of the ideas he’s proposing.Others include: More education on how to safely hold on to the weapon if someone tries to steal it; that gun owners be held to the same standards that officers are when it comes to the ability to use the weapon safely; and for people who openly carry long guns, have a license visible.

The shootings came amid a series of deadly encounters igniting debate over policing and minorities in the United States. The new report shows that 21 of these deaths were not in “felonious incidents”. Instead, they stemmed from vehicle crashes, job-related illnesses and, in one case, an officer who drowned.

Traffic-related accidents and unprovoked attacks account for a majority of police officer deaths from 2010-2014, according to a report released on Friday.

Slain Baton Rouge police officers Matthew Gerald, 41, and Montrell Jackson, 32, and East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Garafola, 45, were killed in what Louisiana officials described as a calculated attack.

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch thanked a group of Baton Rouge police officers today for their work during “challenging times” after the shooting that killed three law enforcement officers earlier this month. “Now the city has to reach out, the country has to reach out to law enforcement, and let you know how much we care”.

The number of police officers who have died in the line of duty has gone up.

The most unsafe state for officers was Texas, where 13 law enforcement agents lost their lives on duty.

Texas leads the nation in the number of law enforcement officers killed for the second year in a row.

The president of the fund says every person in the USA should be outraged by the latest numbers. It said 24 officers were killed by cars so far in 2016.

That’s up 78% from this time a year ago, when gun-related deaths accounted for 18 of 62 law enforcement fatalities through July 20, 2015.

Others have died while performing seemingly routine police work, such as serving a warrant in SC or an eviction notice in Colorado. Seven of the cases involved officers stopping a suspicious person.

The increased numbers remain lower than the past, however. “That’s always a mistake to look at a small portion of time”, says Philip Stinson, a Bowling Green State University criminologist and former cop who collects and analyzes data on police officers.

It is the first time in three years that casualties linked to traffic incidents did not account for the leading cause of the death of police officers.

After the Dallas ambush, which erupted at a peaceful protest in that city, many large police departments ordered officers to patrol in pairs as a way to improve their security.
