Dalton, 45, is first accused of shooting a woman in a Kalamazoo parking lot around 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Michigan State Police said.

Uber defended the process it uses to screen drivers saying Monday background checks couldn’t have identified the risks posed by a MI man charged with murdering six people while reportedly picking up fares. Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting said at a Sunday news conference.

Dalton was arraigned on Monday on 16 charges, including six counts of open murder.

Uber received and did not act on a complaint that Uber driver Jason Dalton had been “driving dangerously” before he went on to shoot and kill six people on Saturday night in MI.

Uber passenger Matt Mellen said he called police to report that Dalton was driving erratically more than an hour before the shootings began.

The attacks began outside the Meadows apartment complex on the eastern edge of Kalamazoo County, where a woman was shot multiple times.

Investigators are particularly interested in communication between Dalton and Uber, as well as customers he might have driven, the sheriff said.

“Right after the first shooting at the apartments, he left the scene and sideswiped a vehicle”, Matyas said.

The surveillance images from Southwick’s Guns Ammo and Gear are time stamped just before 3 p.m. Saturday.

Among those killed were Mary Lou Nye, 62, of Baroda, Mich.; Mary Jo Nye, 60, a former teacher at Calhoun Community High School; 68-year-old Barbara Hawthorne and 74-year-old Dorothy Brown, both of Battle Creek; and Richard Smith, 53, and his 17-year-old son, Tyler.

As authorities tried to gather more clues about Dalton’s life, they found 11 rifles at his Kalamazoo home, a law enforcement official told CNN. She was expected to survive.

In Michigan’s Capitol, Rep. Joe Hoadley, a Democrat from Kalamazoo, said gun violence is a critical concern among his constituents.

Authorities have not provided a motive for what they said was his targeting of victims with no apparent connection to him or to each other in the Saturday night shootings. When he got to the street, he stopped and rapidly backed toward his garage, turning his vehicle so the lights shined toward Block’s house, Block said. “He was rather quiet”, Marc Dunton, 39, told Reuters of the ride he shared with two friends, taking the front-passenger seat beside Dalton.

People will accept one or two fluke incidents, but “if it happens on a repeated basis, you are on thin ice with your brand”, Adamson said. “We intend to cooperate in every way that we can to help determine why and how this occurred”.
