“At approximately 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Haywood County dispatch received a 911 call concerning shots fired from the vicinity of Maple Grove Baptist Church off Stamey Cove Road”.

According to the sheriff’s office, law enforcement and the man shot at each other.
Shots have reportedly been fired outside the Maple Grove Baptist Church near Waynesville – close to Asheville. Officers exchanged fire with the man and have the church surrounded. No law enforcement officers were injured. Gunfire was exchanged between officers and the suspect, whose name has not been released.
Law enforcement was in a stand-off with the suspect in the Bethel Community. Emergency medical workers were called in to render aid to the gunman, but it is unclear if he was struck.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was also called to the scene, but they did not provide any further information.

Officials say there was an active search for a man who is armed and dangerous.
