Camara, was supposed to have gotten off work at 4 p.m. but agreed to stay on for an extra shift, FJC Security Services said.
The gunman died at the scene, at Houston and Varick streets, police said.
The NYPD was working closely with the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and other authorities to determine the suspect’s motive, O’Neill said.
“After the shooting, Mr. Downing continued to walk through the lobby toward the elevator bank at which point he came in brief contact with someone who knew him, the law-enforcement official said”.
According to police, 68-year-old Kevin Downing walked into the federal building, in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City, and started firing.
Investigators say they were hoping to find notes offering a possible motive.
The shooting will be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to Kelly Langmesser, a spokeswoman for the agency’s New York office.
“We don’t know what his target was,” said James O’Neill, chief of department for the New York Police Department.
The guard was standing by the building’s security checkpoint when he was shot. “For now, we are keeping Camara’s family and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers”.
Hector Figueroa, the president of Camara’s union, 32 BJ SEIU, said he was horrified by the news.
