The man killed by police after he shot nine people dead at an Oregon community college was a shy, awkward 26-year-old who was fascinated with shootings, his own social media postings and neighbours have revealed.

Mr Cooper, who was in his fourth day of college when he was shot, was described as “sweet and compassionate” in a family statement read out by police. While she lay bleeding on the floor, the gunman called out to her, “Hey you, blond woman”, her mother said.

“I don’t know how we are going to move forward with our lives without Quinn; our lives are shattered beyond fix”, the family said.
