RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) – Hoang Xuan Vinh heard the cheers.
Wu took the lead after the penultimate shot but Hoang denied him with a brilliant final effort.
They could chant “Wu!” all they wanted.
Wu’s second place gave Brazil its first medal of the Games, the first to be held in South America.
“In the last shot, all I was trying to do was finish it off”, said Hoang, a two-time Olympian who also won his country’s first medal in shooting.
“It is just flawless”, Wu said of his conquest for Brazil.
Wu said he was not bothered by it.
Wu, the No. 1-ranked shooter heading into the Olympics, hit a solid 10.1 on his final shot, but Hoang shot 10.7 to earn gold.
Vietnam has won two Olympic silvers prior to the 2016 Games, one from weightlifting and the other from taekwondo.

Hoang raised his arms in triumph following the final shot and the Brazilian fans sent Wu off with another chant.
