Shootings at Houston auto shop leave gunman, customer dead

As reported, the gunmen who were armed with high powered rifles started firing on Sunday in Houston, targeting at bystanders and police helicopter. The victims of the rampage, which unfolded over hours, included two wounded constables who were treated at a hospital and released. One was saved by his bulletproof vest. Four others were also shot, but their injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

The other fatal victim was a customer who was shot and killed inside his vehicle, police said.

Garza’s family told Houston television station KPRC that something snapped in him following the two tours in Afghanistan and that his condition worsened in recent weeks. Police said the first officer to arrive at the scene immediately became a target for gunfire.

“Witnesses are telling us that he had simply driven in there, parked his auto to get detailed, within a minute or two, that’s when the suspect came out unprovoked and fatally shot him for no apparent reason”, Cannon said. A stray bullet is believed to have caused a fire at a gas station adjacent to the store, interim Police Chief Martha Montalvo said.

No motive for the shooting has yet been determined, according to police. Another officer was shot in the hand and was expected to recover.

Houston authorities blocked the intersection of Memorial and Willcrest drives as they responded to a shooting on Sunday in west Houston. “Until further notice we’ll say suspect because he had a gun, OK, but what his role was we don’t know”.

The force said that a second possible suspect – one of the wounded – was being interviewed by detectives.

It was unclear whether a body found in Travis County near Austin was one of the two people still missing in Texas. Authorities say another person who was not a suspect or an officer was killed, and three other people were wounded. “He’s telling us a version as to what his involvement is”, Houston Police spokesman John Cannon said, per CNN.

“I heard the first shot and I thought it was a transformer” exploding, he said.
