Shoppers fill local stores for Small Business Saturday

Just down the street at Elizabeth & Price owner Analisa Holoubek said shopping local just makes sense.

The Biloxi boutique owner says she loves Small Business Saturday, and what it stands for. “So you give me your money to buy bikes, I give it to my wife and she goes out and spends it all, so that’s how that circle is made”, says Brown. “We would just really appreciate the support to keep us going”.

Most small business owners say it’s pointless to open on Black Friday because most of the shoppers will be at the big box stores.

Beth Harrison has only been operating her business, Wreaths and Whimsy, for a few months and said after seeing the support from the community, she would like to expand. He said it has brought them a lot of attention.

And customers aren’t just customers. “Any specialty giftshop in downtown Grand Junction, you can find someone that is very knowledgeable about the product they sell”. Their style, their taste, it’s kind of fun.

Over in Downtown Panama City, The Little Mustard Seed Store hosts multiple small business owners under one roof. “Because I get great customer service”.

“It’s been really busy”. “So in an attempt to make up for that lost revenue I’ll be open on Friday”.

“A lot of traffic, I’m pleasantly surprised”, said Deleeuw.

“It puts more money into the community and it tries to build up the downtown”. “I probably will do twice as much on a Small Business Saturday as I would on an ordinary Saturday”.

In 2014, an estimated 14.3 billion dollars was spent at independent businesses on “Shop Small Saturday”.

Small businesses have benefitted from Small Business Saturday since is 2010, when it was created.

This year Governor Sandoval issued a proclamation declaring November 28th as ‘Small Business Saturday in Nevada.’ It started nationwide six years ago to help mom and pop shops in fierce competition for holiday shoppers.
