It’s the day after Thanksgiving and it’s the day famous for its deals.

Shoppers across the state were in stores early Friday morning looking to get a jumpstart on their holiday shopping and find the best deals. More recently, a warm autumn has curtailed sales of seasonal merchandise, leaving stores with excess inventory.

The bulk of the Black Friday sales here are offered by online retailers like Zalora and Qoo10, with some brick-and-mortar retailers sitting out. He was there from 6 p.m.to 1 a.m. last night and arrived again at 8 a.m. this morning.

But is this national day of shopping as important as it once was? At home, though, there are no carts to push, people to dodge or long lines to wait in.

“If we run out in the store, we immediately go right online, and then some of the great key items we’ve had we run out online, too”. Mall traffic is in the midst of a long-term slowdown, and shoppers are spending more on experiences and less on stuff.

The Logan Valley Mall opened on Thanksgiving for only six hours – but that brought some the most dedicated shoppers out to the mall.

At the North Shore Mall on Friday, the rush started to die down around the noon hour.

“The majority of our retailers have the online component, so we really see it as marrying the different ways of meeting the customer’s demands”, said one staffer with the Towson Town Center.

Still, the day after the holiday remains the more popular day to go to the mall. They say having stores open earlier alleviates the crowds, but takes away from family time on Thanksgiving, and makes Black Friday lose its excitement.

According to a story from CBS News, nationwide, more than 135 million people plan to do holiday shopping this entire weekend.

After a disappointing third quarter performance, Macy’s CEO Terry Lundgren said he’s encouraged by the retailer’s Black Friday crowds. As much as one fifth of the holiday shopping is expected to be done over the Thanksgiving weekend this year.

Digital research firm comScore predicts online sales in the November-December period will increase 14 per cent this year to US$70 billion.
